Dr. Afzal Mahmood
I have completed my PhD Economics degree requirements by March, 2019. I am extremely interested in obtaining a faculty position at this University, where I can contribute to its focus on Economics education, continue my research on Public Finance, and lead campus and professional service activities. My academic training and 25 years of experience working as a data collection and analysis of Taxation prepare me to be an effective researcher and instructor in your department. My doctoral dissertation was conducted in consultation with Dr. Rukhsana Kalim, and examines the Fiscal Cost of Trade Liberalization and Fiscal Policy Options of Pakistan. In my research, I developed a data base for Pakistan Economy by using A World Integrating Trade System WITS / Software for Market Analysis and Restriction SMART model and data base developed by the World Bank, United Nations Conference on Trade and Development UNCTAD. In my thesis I empirically examined the fiscal consequences of trade liberalization of Pakistan during 1995-2015. I also analyzed the capacity of domestic tax structure to recover the losses due to liberalization process and estimated the tax yield of Pakistan’s economy with help of different determinants. I also help out the policy makers to explore whether Pakistan has successfully recovered the revenue losses faced by adopting liberalized and openness policies. In addition to my dissertation research, other areas that interest me for my future research stem from my goal of developing data bases for other developing countries and improved analytical models and methods for Public finance, evaluation, and upgrade of data base by using this SMART model utilizing in world economic policy options. These are just a couple of projects I plan to continue and grow with the support of this University research facilities and sharing my knowledge with the students of the campus. During my graduate training, I was also fortunate enough to have served as a teaching assistant and occasionally substitute lecturer for graduate level courses of Economics as visiting faculty in different campuses of private universities. I found that my professional experience as an engineer provided me with a broad view that is useful in assisting students with projects and assignments. These experiences have built my confidence and an interest in teaching and I look forward to the opportunity to not only teach existing courses, but also work to develop new ones. I would enjoy discussing this position with you in the weeks to come. In the meantime, I am enclosing my curriculum vitae and statements of teaching and research interests. Letters of recommendation will arrive under separate cover. If you require any additional materials or information, I am happy to supply it. Thank you very much for your consideration. Sincerely, Dr. Afzal Mahmood FBR, Lahore
